Together with the fur seal, sea lions comprise the “eared seals” family known as Otariidae. Sea lions extend from subarctic to tropical waters across the globe, and actually have small variations from one another, such as skull size, depending on what waters they live in.
Sadly, sea lions have been seriously impacted by human activities such as over fishing and pollution. Commercial fishing drastically reduces the overall population of fish contained within the sea lion’s diet, forcing sea lions to directly compete with commercial fishing in order to secure a food source. Ultimately, this competition and a lack of a food source can cause sea lions to abandon certain locations and habitats entirely. With that in mind, make sure you have plenty of fresh fish on hand if you decide to take this beautiful sea lion home!
